Can you resell stamps?

Since unused postage never expires, you can resell stamps. It is 100% legal, and there are no laws prohibiting the resale of postage stamps.

Have you ever purchased stamps at Costco, Walmart, or the neighborhood liquor store? Every business that sells stamps, and is not the Post Office, legally resells stamps.

How much can you expect to receive?

All unused stamps issued after 1930 are worth face value. In other words, they are worth the value depicted on the stamp, and can be used to send mail today.

All you need to do is make the current postage rate. For example, in 2020 the First-Class letter rate is 55¢. To make the rate, you could use a 41¢ stamp from the early 2000’s, a 10¢ stamp from the 1970’s, and a 4¢ stamp from the 1950’s.

That being said, don’t expect to receive full face value for your stamps, unless you are a business like the ones mentioned above. The resale market for unused postage is almost always a percentage of face value.

For example, if you have a sheet of 20 $1.00 stamps, the total face value is $20.00. You should expect to get around 50% face value, or $10.

Remember, because postage never expires, it may make sense for you to hold on to them and use them in the future. However, if you don’t expect to use them for postage, or if you’re in need of the money, selling them may be your best option.

If your stamps are older than 1930, they may have a premium collector value. This means that they may be worth more, or much much more than their face value. Check with a stamp dealer if you think your stamps are older than 1930.
